  • Delivered by practitioners with backgrounds in policing and workplace investigations.
07 Investigation Capability

Witness interviews.

One full day. The quality of an investigation outcome is bound to the quality of the interviews behind it.

Built from years of policing and WHS practice in witness and victim interviewing, this program develops the skill that decides whether a finding holds together. It also deals directly with the psychosocial and performance management pressure that the interview process itself creates, which is a live exposure in any matter involving conflict or distress.

Module 01

Interview Planning

  • Building the interview plan from the incident, allegation or complaint.
  • Deciding the order witnesses are seen in and what each conversation needs to establish.
  • Preparing the room, the record and the support arrangements before anyone sits down.
Module 02

Question Structure

  • Open, closed and probing questions, and the sequence they belong in.
  • The questioning habits that contaminate an account before anyone notices.
  • Testing an account without turning the interview into an interrogation.
Module 03

Cognitive Interviewing

  • Recall techniques developed in investigative practice, applied to a workplace setting.
  • Working with memory, sequence and detail rather than against them.
  • Managing the gap between what a witness saw and what they have since been told.
Module 04

Reluctant, Distressed & Fatigued Witnesses

  • Reading the person in front of you and adjusting the approach in the moment.
  • Working with silence, emotion, hostility and the effects of shift and fatigue.
  • Knowing when to pause, adjourn, offer support or hand the interview on.
Module 05

Psychosocial Risk In The Process

  • Conducting interviews so the process mitigates psychosocial risk rather than creating it.
  • The exposure that sits in any matter involving conflict, distress or allegations between colleagues.
  • Where performance and conduct issues surface mid-interview, and which process they belong in.
Module 06

Statements & Read Backs

  • Recording an account that reflects what was actually said.
  • Reading a statement back and correcting it properly with the witness.
  • The practices that give a record weight when it is examined again months later.

Why A Standalone Day

Interviews Decide The Outcome.

Interview technique is built into our ICAM investigation training as a matter of course. This day exists for organisations where the interview is the real gap, and where a poorly run conversation carries more risk than the event that triggered it.

Building and evidencing interview capability supports and evidences officer due diligence under section 27 of the Work Health and Safety Act 2020 (WA).
